Review: The Crown of Embers

The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson
Release: September 18, 2012
Source: ARC (from publisher for review)

In the sequel to the acclaimed The Girl of Fire and Thorns, a seventeen-year-old princess turned war queen faces sorcery, adventure, untold power, and romance as she fulfills her epic destiny.

Elisa is the hero of her country. She led her people to victory against a terrifying enemy, and now she is their queen. But she is only seventeen years old. Her rivals may have simply retreated, choosing stealth over battle. And no one within her court trusts her-except Hector, the commander of the royal guard, and her companions. As the country begins to crumble beneath her and her enemies emerge from the shadows, Elisa will take another journey. With a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with, Elisa crosses the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone's power. That is not all she finds. A breathtaking, romantic, and dangerous second volume in the Fire and Thorns trilogy.

Earlier this year, I posted my short review of The Girl of Fire and Thorns. Simply put, it was amazing. I loved Elisa and I applauded Rae Carson for her ballsy decision to kill off certain characters (who will not be named).

It's hard to imagine, but The Crown of Embers is even better than its predecessor. The first 100 pages made me feel all sorts of emotions as Elisa deals with her new role as Queen. There are tears! There are attempted assassinations! Believe me when I say the action is not lacking. I was fully engrossed in this book from page one.

However, my favorite part of this book was seeing Elisa grow as a character. This is how character growth is done! It was so real, so raw, and so moving, and I found myself loving Elisa more and more. She's no longer that self-depricating overweight princess. She's grown to see herself as someone people look up to. She's grown to see herself as Queen. That knowledge alone allows Elisa to grow a tougher skin. She's stronger, smarter, yet still flawed in her own way.

And the love interest!  *swoon* I am so happy that Carson chose to develop the love like a slow burning ember. Amongst dozens of books with insta-love, The Crown of Embers is a breath of fresh air. This love is born out of respect, not lust.

The world Elisa lives in is also worthy of praise. It's so vivid, so rich, and so layered. It's the perfect setting for Elia's journey of love and self-discovery. Trust me, Elisa doesn't stay cooped up in the Palace the whole time. And there's still plenty of action, probably more than the first book. My only complaint? The ending. Cuz I want The Bitter Kingdom! Like now! The ending is crazy amazing and it left me breathless...

Bottom line: The Crown of Embers is everything I could have hoped it would be and more. I loved it.

Thank you, Harpercollins for this ARC. I assure you, when I received it, there was squealing. Lots of squealing. The ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review and it in no way affects my opinion.

WoW: Through the Ever Night

Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi
Release: January 8, 2012

It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder,
Can their love survive through the ever night?

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

Defiance Book Launch: RECAP

So, a week ago, I had the pleasure of attending CJ Redwine's book launch for her debut, Defiance. I went with my best friend (who hadn't read the book) and my 12-year-old cousin (who had). There was some confusion with parking, but eventually, we found the right place (at a church community center).

About thirty minutes after seven, the lights started to change and a man appeared on stage. He introduced himself as CJ's husband before the lights were cut off and the book trailer for Defiance played. When the trailer finished, CJ appeared from the back of the room and walked down the aisle towards the stage. Almost everyone gave her a standing ovation. She was clearly touched.

CJ was funny, humble, and...perhaps a little frazzled with the book release, the book launch, and the deadlines ahead! Ah, the life of a writer. But CJ took it all in stride and she began to read an excerpt from the book.

People clapped, and then the Q&A began. CJ's poor husband went around the large room, microphone in hand. There had to be a least 2-3 dozen questions that were asked. They ranged from music, to POVs, to the publication process.

After the Q&A, CJ drew the winner for the Nook Tablet. I was glad to find out that the girl who won didn't have a e-reader. So yay! Then, CJ pointed to the refreshment table. Her husband went over and lit the cake on fire. Well, he didn't light the cake itself--the fire was in front of the cake. Check it out.

Pretty cool, huh? And very "Defiance-worthy".

Once the cake was lit, people began to line up to purchase books for the signing. I honestly didn't expect there to be so. many. people! Most of them knew CJ personally, and that's quite a testament to her as a person. I thought she couldn't be more awesome until my cousin stepped up to have her book signed. Her name is Elim. CJ asked how to spell it, and then she asked if she could use her name in a book. Of course my cousin said yes! Then I go up and tell her my name. She signs my copy of Defiance before giving me a strange look. She then asks if she could use my name as well.

Um, yes! YOU CAN TOTALLY USE MY NAME!

A part of me wasn't sure she'd keep that promise until she tweeted me later that night:

Guys, no joke, my cousin will be in book 2! And I will be in book 2 (or book 3)! It's still pretty surreal, and I'm not sure I will completely believe it until I see my name on the page. Still, knowing I will be seeing my name in her books makes me 100xs more excited for second and third book.

I also got a picture of all three of us with CJ:

And afterwards, we had CAKE. And it was yummy.

Then I went home and stroked my pretty pretty book. <333

So guys, tell me about your book signing experience(s)! Let me know if you liked Defiance or not! Let me know if you've ever had a character in a book named after you!

Review: What's Left of Me

What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang
Release: September 18, 2012
Source: e-ARC from HarperCollins via Edelwiess

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t…

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable–hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet…for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

In the beginning, there's Addie and Eva. Eva and Addie. Two souls intertwined within one body-- sharing, living, and breathing in the world around them. In their world, every person is born with two souls. And in their world, one soul eventually vanishes. That soul is forgotten, while the other resumes control of the body they once shared.

Addie and Eva are different.

Eva fought to remain. She didn't want "settle". People whispered. Doctors were consulted. Until, by some miracle, Addie is declared "healthy". Eva is gone and Addie remains.

Except this isn't the case. Eva continues to reside within Addie's mind, unable to control the world around her. An observer, and nothing more. But people like Addie and Eva are dangerous to society. Hybrids, always in conflict with oneself.

And thus begins the story of two souls, told from the perspective of the recessive soul. The soul fighting to exist.

Kat Zhang's debut novel, What's Left of Me, is undoubtedly unique. In the hands of an unskilled writer, this book could have easily gone awry. Writing about two souls in one body can be tricky, but Zhang makes it work. And most importantly, she makes it believable.

My favorite aspect of What's Left of Me is the connection Addie and Eva share. It's so complicated and raw. They each have distinct personalities, and they each have their strengths and weaknesses. I related to both souls, unable to decide who deserved to live or how they could live as they were. Love, jealousy, and pity saturate Addie and Eva's relatoinship. Again, I found it raw and surprisingly believable. Their close connection, however, comes at a price. They are constantly in each other's head, unable to live apart. Privacy is out of the question.

Now, I won't spoil the plot, but I will say this: What's Left of Me is a YA novel with little romance. In fact, the romance doesn't develop until the last 15-30 pages. Zhang chose to focus this book on Addie and Eva, so go ahead and let out a sigh of relief. Or not. Honestly, I kind of wanted a little more romance, and I think its exclusion will be a turn-off for some readers. Kudos to Zhang, though, for not drowning the book romance! It would have cheapened the book. Now, I am looking forward to how Zhang portrays this romance in the sequel.

My major complaint is the drawn out and anticlimactic ending. I wanted a little more promise of what to expect in the sequel, but I never really got that. Of course, I still have unanswered questions and a vested interest in the story and the characters. I suppose I just wanted the ending to have more "bang" and never got it.

So if you're looking for a "fun" read, this might not be your cup of tea. There is some suspense, some action, but this book is more about Addie and Eva and the society they live in. It's the kind of book that fascinates me and makes me think. I like that, but there will be others who are bound to find this book uninteresting and slow. And that's okay. As for me? I am eagerly anticipating the sequel.

Thank you, Harper Collins, for the e-ARC.
